General Project Instructions:
1: Place sheets of plastic wrap on work
area, overlapping edges slightly to make a rectangle slightly
larger than the largest piece of fabric.
2: Images Using Rubber
Stamps: Using a paint brush or the bottle nozzle, apply BATIK
E-Z medium to rubber stamp and then press stamp onto fabric.
Repeat using the same stamp or other stamps until satisfied with
design.
3: Images Using Stencils:
Place stencil in position on fabric and, using a paint brush
or the bottle nozzle, apply BATIK E-Z medium to stencil
design. Repeat using the same stencil or another stencil. You can
combine with rubber stamp images.
4:Direct Application of BATIK E-Z
Medium: Use the bottle nozzle and "draw" on fabric
or dip paint brush into BATIK E-Z and paint directly on
fabric.
5: Allow BATIK E-Z medium to dry -
approximately 15 to 30 minutes depending on how thick it was
applied.
6: Mix RIT dye:
-
Powder: add 2 tsp. to 1 cup
hottest possible water, stir until dissolved.
-
Liquid: add 1 tsp. to 1 cup
hottest possible water, stir thoroughly to mix well.
-
Note: For darker shades use more
dye. Lighter shades require less dye.
7: Using the paint brushes - paint, drip,
drop, and drizzle the liquid dye solutions over the fabric. You
can control and highlight certain areas with a selected color -
for example, greens in a leaf design.
8: Roll up loosely so that a layer of
plastic wrap is between each layer of fabric. Use another layer of
plastic if necessary to cover it in fabric thoroughly.
Heat Setting Color In The Microwave
1: Place a piece of the wet, dyed plastic
wrapped fabric in a microwave over on HIGH for 2 minutes to heat
set the dye.
2: Allow the microwaved fabric to cool
enough to handle safely before removing from oven.
Rinsing and care
1: Wearing rubber gloves, remove from
microwave oven. Remove plastic wrap and rinse in sink until water
runs clear. Adding 1 tsp of laundry detergent will help remove
unbonded dye and BATIK E-Z medium more quickly.
2: Lay wet, rinsed fabric between layers of
white paper towels and iron to make sure all dye has been rinsed
out. If dye appears on the paper towel, resume rinsing.
3: Line dry or machine dry if not dyeing
wool.
4: Cold water washing on the gentel cycle
is a recommended care method.
Cleanup:
1: Clean containers and sink immediately
after dyeing by scrubbing with hot water and bleach or powder
cleanser. Do not use dyeing containers or utensils for food
products.
